Budapest, Hungary | The classic case of things don’t go according to plan has always been an inevitable part of my travel itineraries, most especially in these post-pandemic times given the unpredictability of health and safety protocols upon which imposed restrictions are based. But to what extent? is the more interesting question.
In the most recent case, we had to scrap an entire plan altogether and come up with a totally new one after all the inconveniences we had to endure just to reach Croatia e.g. PCR test to and upon arrival in Naples (our chosen connecting point to Zagreb), etc. Hence, we mutually agreed that our noses have already had enough and could not further undergo one more traumatic round of swabs should we proceed to our supposed Vienna plan. The best alternative was to go for a diversion in the form of Budapest, an equally inviting neighbor.
So the 10-day mini-Euro-Christmas adventure ended up right in this beautifully landlocked city of Budapest, a perfect place to seal the year in a revenge traveling fashion, making up for all the lost time and opportunities after being a prisoner, stifled travel-wise, for good two years. It just felt so good finally being able to travel again, moving on from those self-pitying lockdown blues, despite how rough things have gone at some point, here and there.
Before the day ended, we flew back to Estonia just in time to catch some New Year welcome party in this country that has been my home for the past four months; the very same country which wasn’t really initially part of my plan, but welcomed me anyways.2021 has swiftly come and gone but man did it go out with a bang. Happy new year everyone!
